Phyllis Kapp – Continuing Her Legacy of Excellence

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

Phyllis Kapp

Recently, our matriarch, Phyllis Kapp, spent time up north in Abiquiu, enjoying time with family and painting the beautiful landscapes inherent in that part of Northern New Mexico. To our delight, she returned to Santa Fe with four new pieces.

Undoubtedly the Southwest’s most delightful watercolorist, Phyllis continues to capture in spontaneous fashion the landscapes of the state, all the while earning her the adoration and adulation of collectors and fans. She has been quoted as saying, “I love to play while I paint. I love to make people smile.” This spirit pours through her work and elicits a sense of joy in all who experience it.

This Year’s Paint Out Was A Grand Occasion

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

What a wonderful day we had on Saturday for the Paint Out! We had so much fun having our artists be here with us, with so many wonderful people stopping by to enjoy the festivities, and with the overall atmosphere of celebrating art on The Road. And we couldn’t have asked for better weather!

There are so many thank you’s to give that it is hard to keep them all straight- to Fletcher and John (and Max) for gracing us with their music; to the student group for the doing the same; to Phyllis Kapp, Andree Hudson, Paul Cunningham, Jono Tew, Matthew Higginbotham, Lori Faye Bock, Bernard Marks for being willing to put themselves and their art on display for everyone to enjoy; to the organizers of the Paint Out for making this one the best yet; and to all of our friends and family for coming out to support the gallery and Canyon Road.

It is always great for us to be able to share fine art with others. It is a passion we are fully committed to. The Paint Out was a great way to share that passion, and this couldn’t have been a better way to close out what has been a wonderful summer art season.

As we bring the summer season fully to a close we are already getting ready for our next show- ‘Deck The Halls’. It is our annual holiday show and begins the week of Thanksgiving and is already shaping up as one not to be missed! Once again, we thank you all for your friendship and support, both on Saturday at the Paint Out, and always.

Come To Waxlander For One Of The Year’s Funnest Art Events

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

Here at Waxlander Gallery and Sculpture Garden, we are very excited for this Saturday’s Canyon Road Paint Out. The collection of galleries and artists painting this year is going to make this one extraordinary event. We are pleased to have these artists joining us: Andree Hudson, Marshall Noice, Matthew Higginbotham, Bernard Marks, Jono Tew, Lori Faye Bock, Michael Etheridge, and Paul Cunningham.

What makes this event unique and special is that it brings together many artists for everyone to enjoy and visit with, all in the same day. Last year we had such a great time with our artists, and they had a great time with each other. They loved the opportunity to get to mingle with patrons, and they really enjoyed getting to share in a little good-natured ribbing with each other. If you’ve ever wondered how artists joke around and poke fun at each other, stop by on Saturday!

We were also so happy to have musical groups from Santa Fe public schools last year, and we are pleased to have them back again this year. It is a great chance to see the next generation of artists and performers as they get started in the world of the arts.

The festivities get started at 10am and run until 4. For a full list of participating galleries and artists, visit http://visitcanyonroad.com/paintout.html. Or with any questions, please feel free to call the gallery at 505-984-2202.

Come Out and Join Us for This Year’s Paint Out!

Thursday, October 6th, 2011

The annual Canyon Road Paint Out is Saturday, October 15th. We are very excited for this year’s event as it will be the biggest and best Paint Out yet. The event goes from 10-4 with 36 galleries and 90 artists participating, and a parade at noon. The parade includes three area high school marching bands and Santa Fe’s own Mayor David Coss.

The Paint Out is our way of paying tribute to the galleries and artists who got Canyon Road started as an art Mecca some three decades ago. Artists would literally be outside on the street painting and mingling with patrons.

Our matriarch, Phyllis Kapp, was there in the early days and can attest to the hard work it took to make Canyon Road what it is today. Through their hard work, the galleries and artists sparked what would become the center for the Santa Fe art scene and help turn Santa Fe into the second largest art market in the country, behind only New York.

We are very excited to be featuring eight of our artists this year- Andree Hudson, Marshall Noice, Matthew Higginbotham, Bernard Marks, Jono Tew, Lori Faye Bock, Michael Etheridge, and Paul Cunningham.

Last year was a great chance for the artists to showcase their work for the patrons who attended. It was also great for them to be able to work side by side with their fellow artists, and even get to poke fun at one another every so often. They enjoy being a part of the Paint Out just as much as we enjoy having them.

We hope that you will be able to join us for this year’s Paint Out. The organizers and participating galleries have gone a long way toward making this year’s event truly memorable. We are very much looking forward to it and we hope to see you here.

In Living Color – Sharon Markwardt

Sunday, October 2nd, 2011

“I’m only half-joking when I say my horse threw me into western art!” – Sharon Markwardt

We are proud to present our final artist show for the summer season as we feature fourth-generation Texan and western painter Sharon Markwardt and her one woman show, “In Living Color.” The show begins next Tuesday, October 4th and runs through October 17th. We will be hosting a reception for Sharon next Friday, October 7th from 5-7pm.

Country Girl

Don't Call Me an Ass

Horns Someday

It was in 2005 that her work took a drastic. In her early 40s, she began riding horses for the first time and was badly injured after falling off her favorite steed. After getting back on the horse, literally and figuratively speaking, and learning to ride properly, she was instilled with a new sense of courage as well as a new perception of color.

Bold

We encourage our artists to paint from the heart, and that is what Sharon has done for this show. The subjects she enjoys exploring most are animals, focusing on their relationships with each other and with us. She believes they have personalities, and with each piece she seeks to expose that “soul” with humor.

Being a fourth-generation Texan, it is no wonder that another common subject for Sharon are cowboy boots, being iconic of the American West and the pioneer spirit. She says, “To me, they represent boldness and self-sufficiency, an independence from the need for the approval of others. The stark, minimalist backgrounds I favor refer to the unknowns and dangers that constitute life, through which we must boldly stride.”

Her unusual color usage causes the same image to appear much more realistic when viewed from afar. She explains, “I look for the beauty in each of my subjects, and strive to leave my viewers in an upbeat mood, ready to face the challenges of their day.” She explains further, “I thirst to learn something new with each painting, and hunger to bring the colors to life. The intense joy of the painting process feeds my soul.”

Collector Bruce Meller of Pound Ridge, NY sees this fully and shared, “I was originally drawn to Sharon Markwardt’s work due to her use of color and imagery. Her paintings seem to convey of intimacy with her subjects: as both the individuality and personality of each animal are expressed on the canvas. I am moved every day I see her pieces in my home.”

We invite you to join us for this truly vibrant show and experience Western art expressed in a highly colorful fashion. For more information, please feel free to call the gallery at 505-984-2202 or visit our website at www.waxlander.com. We look forward to seeing you!
