Paul Cunningham

Biography

Paul Cunningham's passionately colorful acrylic paintings nourish the mind, body and soul while openly inviting the participant to become a part of the world his paintbrush has flawlessly created.  His stirring splashes of color combined with a proprietary high-gloss application on the finish layer merge into intense artistic creations.

In each of Mr. Cunningham's pieces, the color interacts with space and light to create transient forms that appear to change before your eyes and initiate continual conversation.  The enthusiast gazes through layers of transparent glaze applied in a pains-taking, time-consuming process.  This glaze creates the window through which viewers transport themselves into Mr. Cunningham's enticing world.  It is this final glaze that also makes his colors richer and the emotional connection that much greater.  Although the images are generally abstract and almost 'other-worldly,' they look oddly familiar and strangely alluring.

Paul Cunningham is a self-taught artist who displayed his artistic touch at a very early age.  Throughout his life he was been inspired by a deep appreciation of the West, fueled by many boyhood trips throughout Colorado, Wyoming, Arizona, and New Mexico.  The rich hues in his paintings reflect this passion.

For most of Mr. Cunningham's career his work was focused on western and southwestern themes.  Cowboys and the wild west were his primary subject matter.  In the last few years, however, he began to explore new artistic paths - completely different paths.   In 2009, he discovered that he had become completely re-energized with his new abstract pieces.

Paul Cunningham is a Colorado native and has been working as an artist for three decades.  His work has been collected globally and he has been featured in publications such as Southwest Art magazine.  He is the proud recipient of the George Phippen Memorial Foundation award.
