Artist's Statement
On my first visit to New Mexico I had a sense of belonging to this land."
Inspired by the light infused architecture and landscape of the Southwest,
Phyllis began her study of the adobes of New Mexico.
" The
architecture seems to have a life of its own-almost organic in nature,
adobes seem to sprout from the dry ground. I can sit for hours and watch
the light play on the contours and the angles intensifying the shape it
falls on."
Phyllis' work is characterized by spontaneity, both composition and color,
taking on an intensity that captures her love of the area. Her pastels
are anything but "pastel" in color, and her style anything but structured.
"This media allows me to get right into a painting-to feel the texture
and mold the shape with my hands. After my first trip to Santa Fe and
Taos, I put aside my oils and picked up pastels. I knew I needed a more
vivid medium to capture my images.
